From farm to Garage

Luke with Katherine and son, Hugo.

“I love that good, flavorful, well-crafted food can just be really simple,” says Luke Groce, farmer and server at Garage Bar.

Luke and his wife Katherine began farming on their two-acre New Albany plot in 2009.  Luke is the primary operator and works on the farm on a day-to-day basis during the growing season (from March to November).

“I certainly don’t usually bring up the fact that I grow things on the menu often … I like to talk about vegetables though, so I’ll do that at great length with anyone who will listen,” Luke says.

The farm runs under the premise of “good food grown without anything bad.” Currently, the garlic scapes on the white pie and the local mixed lettuces hail from Luke’s farm. “My mustard, chard, turnips, cherry tomatoes, okra, kale, carrots, parsnips, and some other stuff have been in specials, pizza pies, soups, and pickle plates,” Luke says.

In addition to providing food for Garage Bar, Luke also has relationships with Proof on Main, The Mayan Cafe, Decca and occasionally Harvest.

“I do like to bring it up when people want to test our locavore credentials,” Luke says.

In addition to providing his farm’s bounty to local restaurants, Luke also sells at the Pheonix Hill/NuLu Farmers Market every Tuesday from 3:00 to 6:30 (just a few blocks from Garage Bar).

The farm also runs a community supported agriculture (CSA) program, where members pay a flat fee in the beginning of the growing season in exchange for a weekly delivery of whatever the farm produces.
